Asian handicap explained: 0, half, whole and quarter lines
6 min read
Asian handicap gives one team a virtual head start, removes the draw and often refunds part of your stake. It looks confusing at first, but every line follows a few simple rules.
The idea
A handicap is added to a team's score before the bet is settled. Backing a team at −1 means it must win by more than one goal after one goal is subtracted. Backing the other side at +1 means it is given a one-goal start. There is no draw outcome: the bet either wins, loses, or is refunded.
Half-goal lines (−0.5, +0.5, −1.5 ...)
These can never be refunded, because a half goal can't be tied.
- −0.5: the team must win. The same as backing a home win in 1X2, usually at slightly different odds.
- +0.5: the team must win or draw (like double chance).
- −1.5: the team must win by two or more goals.
Whole-goal lines (0, −1, +1 ...)
If the adjusted result is level, your stake is returned (a push).
- 0 (draw no bet): win if the team wins, stake back on a draw, lose if it loses.
- −1: win by 2+ = win, win by exactly 1 = push, draw or loss = lose.
Quarter lines (−0.25, −0.75 ...)
A quarter line splits your stake into two equal bets on the neighbouring lines. −0.25 is half on 0 and half on −0.5. −0.75 is half on −0.5 and half on −1.
Worked examples with a €10 stake at odds of 1.90:
| Line | Result | Settlement | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| −0.25 | Team wins | Both halves win | €19.00 |
| −0.25 | Draw | €5 refunded, €5 lost (half lost) | €5.00 |
| −0.75 | Wins by 1 | €5 wins at 1.90, €5 refunded (half won) | €14.50 |
| −0.75 | Wins by 2+ | Both halves win | €19.00 |
| −1 | Wins by 1 | Push | €10.00 |
Why value bettors like Asian handicap
- Lower margins. With two outcomes instead of three, the built-in margin is often smaller than in 1X2 markets.
- Less variance. Pushes and half results smooth out swings.
- Sharp pricing. Handicap markets attract professional money, so their fair odds are a strong reference (see fair odds).
OddsEdge picks include Asian handicap selections when the best available odds are clearly above fair odds. Each pick shows its line, the best odds and the minimum odds worth taking.
Key takeaways
- Half lines: win or lose. Whole lines: can push. Quarter lines: stake split across two lines.
- 0 is draw no bet. −0.5 is a plain win. +0.5 is win or draw.
- Check the line as well as the odds before you bet: a pick at −0.25 is not the same bet at −0.75.
